Use of 3D-FEM Tools to Improve Loss Allocation in Three-Core Armored Cables

Loss allocation through analytical expressions in three-core lead-sheathed armored cables is challenging due to the complex geometry of this type cable, commonly employed submarine energy transmission systems (involving twisted conductors, sheaths and armor). Most IEC standard 60287 have not been properly adapted for cables, leading inaccurate values different losses, so important efforts are currently devoted improving them. In work, an improved ultra-shortened 3D finite element model (FEM) developing in-depth analysis electromagnetic interactions that take place 6 real being especially focused on those aspects considered standard. As a result, conclusions derived regarding losses conductors sheaths, which introduce corrections accuracy expressions. The new formulation then propose simplified experimental armor loss procedure. This virtually applied FEM tool more than 700 cable configurations, showing remarkable improvement over previous procedures.
